The Shure VP89L is a shotgun microphone that features a long interference tube and a modular design, giving sound professionals the reach they need to pull clear audio from distant sources. With a hypercardioid and lobar polar pattern that narrows the acceptance angle to roughly 30 degrees, it rejects distracting background noise and focuses on the subject, whether that is an actor several feet away, a bird across a clearing, or a presenter in a busy street.

An electret condenser capsule feeds a transformerless Class A preamplifier, a circuit that keeps distortion low and preserves fast transient detail. The result is natural, articulate dialogue and precise environmental sounds that sit easily in the mix. Because the self-noise measures just 15 dB, the microphone remains quiet enough for critical ambience or whisper-level voice work.

A recessed switch activates a 12 dB per octave low-cut filter at 200 Hz. This control removes wind rumble, vehicle hum or handling vibrations before they reach the recorder, saving time in post-production. The microphone runs on standard 11 to 52 volt phantom power and connects through a balanced three-pin XLR output, so it integrates directly with professional field recorders, ENG cameras, mixers and audio interfaces.

The modular capsule system shared by the VP89 series allows engineers to swap to shorter or medium interference tubes when the job calls for a different reach, without replacing the entire microphone. Mount the VP89L on a boom pole with a windshield for exterior film shoots, clamp it to a camera for documentary work, or keep it in a kit for wildlife expeditions. Wherever precise long range pickup is required, this Shure microphone delivers consistent, dependable performance.

Highlights:
  • Hypercardioid and lobar pickup pattern with about 30 degree acceptance angle

  • Electret condenser capsule with 15 dB self-noise for clean recordings
  • Balanced three-pin XLR output integrates with professional gear
  • Operates on 11 to 52 V phantom power
  • Modular capsule system lets you change tube length for different shooting scenarios
