About Takada-yaki: The Takada and Onada areas in Mino have long prospered as towns famous for pottery. The production of everyday pottery in the mountains began in the Kamakura period when the Tiger Valley Yongbao Temple was founded. Furthermore, during the Azuchi-Momoyama period, Seto Black, representing Mino ware, was first made here, tracing its history back to ancient times. The primary reason pottery flourished in Takada town is due to the clay mined there. Known as 「Aodo」 or 「Knot Clay,」 this clay is the only single-flavor clay in Japan, meaning it can be used to make pottery without any processing. The characteristics of the 「Takada-yaki」 products made from this clay include: 1)Excellent viscosity (elasticity), 2)Can be fired at relatively low temperatures, and 3)High heat resistance. Due to its elastic nature, it allows for the creation of pottery in various shapes and sizes. This clay has long been used for practical items like storage jars, sake decanters, mortars (grinding bowls), and rice cooking pots.
